If you’d like to know more about our services read on below. And check out the testimonial from a real customer who was sick of the expensive providers and made the switch with Electricity Monster.
Electricity Suppliers – Adelaide
“You Don’t Need To Stick With Expensive Electricity Companies”
Electricity Monster provides a free service for both families & business looking for a better deal on their electricity & gas. Australian electricity prices have been driven up dramatically in recent times, and finding sharp energy plans is hard. But not with us!
Why are South Australia's electricity prices so high?
One of the major problems you have in SA is that your weather can be rather erratic. Especially in the summertime when heat waves drive your wholesale prices through the roof. What’s the wholesale price for electricity? This is the price the electricity generators charge to sell electricity to your supplier, your supplier is the company on your bill. If they’re buying electricity at an expensive rate, then they’re going to pass on these high prices to you. Sometimes the strain on the network gets so bad they can’t even keep the supply going. That’s why blackouts have become such an issue in South Australia.
Many South Aussies don't realise that a substantial amount of your electricity is piped in across wires from the Latrobe Valley in Victoria. That’s a long way for the electricity to travel. This makes it very expensive to get it to Adelaide, as an example.
Waiting for the South Australian energy market to improve is a slow process. No-one is really sure how long it will take. Blackouts have been a common issue over the past few years. It’s completely understandable if this is a concern of yours when you look to change your provider. However, it’s important to note that there’s not much you can do about it. The issue is that actual electricity supply can’t be changed. This is because the supply comes from SA Power Networks and not the retailer on your bill. So if a blackout is going to happen, it’s going to happen with any retailer. While many people are working towards a solution, there is a substantial dollar amount attached to reaching it. It might cost hundreds of millions, to billions, of dollars and this is going to come out of the consumers’ pocket. The Aussie taxpayer, as usual, is going to be footing some part of this bill. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like power bills are going to come down anytime soon. So you really should give us a call and compare electricity providers today.
Blackouts, alternative solutions & Elon Musk!
There are a lot of things contributing to these blackouts. These include: high demand for electricity from the people of South Australia, failures in the thermal generators, and incorrectly programmed wind turbines. As of 2018, South Australia supplies over a third of the nation’s total wind power. This is a great start, but it may take some time to iron out the kinks. Wind power however might not be enough. On a scorching hot day the grid requires a large amount of base load power, and this can only really be generated by a coal fired plant currently. Gas in the future could provide a long term solution or even nuclear power.
In recent years there’s been significant interest in SA’s geothermal potential and the South Australian government is always exploring better ways to harness solar energy. This drive to get deeper into the solar arena has led to one of the most exciting developments in residential electricity in Australia.
The billionaire businessman, investor and philanthropist Elon Musk joined the ranks of electricity providers in Adelaide. His company Tesla has pounced on SA’s blackout woes, with some plans of their own.
After hearing about the situation you’ve been having, Tesla boldly claimed they could solve South Australia’s problem with their massive tesla battery. This story ran in many major Australian newspapers.
After being asked if he was serious Musk responded with a tweet:
“Tesla will get the system installed and working 100 days from contract signature or it is free. That serious enough for you?”
Co-Founder, CEO, & Product Architect of Tesla, Inc.
Musk made his deadline with time to spare and successfully installed the the largest battery in the world. Tesla will be providing batteries and solar panels to housing trust homes in both Adelaide and the wider South Australian region. This setup could reduce the price of their residential electricity connection by nearly a third.
Many regular South Australians have been getting in behind the solar plans without Musk’s help. Due to the inconsistency of electricity in the state, solar has become a pretty appealing option to many South Aussies. More than 50% of South Australia's cites the ever rising cost of their power as a main reason for switching to solar.
What should you be looking for in an Electricity Provider In South Australia?
It’s a total embarrassment that a first world government can’t produce enough electricity for its residents. The government might spend some time arguing over a solution, but while they’re arguing you’re struggling to pay your power bill. The only solution is for you to take things into your own hands. If you have had enough of your electricity provider then you should definitely shop for a new on with us.
Interesting to note, it's often very difficult to get wholesale agreements with generators to supply South Australia.
This is problem due to lack of supply. Because of this, you may find yourself ringing around lots of electricity providers that can supply you at very high prices, as they can’t get any cheap forward contracts at the generator level.
However what if we told you which companies do have supply in South Australia? Then you could pick from these select providers, each one offering a sharp rate. That’s exactly what we do, we are always comparing suppliers.
How to find the best retailers
Deregulation is a double-edged sword. There used to be one choice, but now you’re faced with many more options than you can make sense of. So where do you start? Who do you go with as your electricity supplier? Customers often compare the discounts on their bills, however this doesn't help at all. As the actual rate your paying is totally different. A bigger discount off a higher rate is often more expensive that some companies that have cheaper rates and a smaller pay on time discount.
This can become very confusing and it’s much easier working this out on a computer than trying to do this yourself. This is exactly how our business works and it’s very easy for us to compare providers. The question many consumer have is, was deregulation a good thing for South Australia?
Privatisation of ETSA in 1990
In the early 1990s, the State Bank of South Australia, suffered a financial implosion. The South Australian government was forced to bail it out, and this left the government in a massive amount of debt. Initially the government promise to not privatise the ETSA, but after winning re-election South Australian premier John Olsen decided to go ahead and privatise it. He cited the mounting debt as his reason. This was an unpopular move, and It took the government a while to rally support from other politicians, but by 1999 the ETSA was privatised.
The privatisation broke apart the entire business. The generation, transmission, distribution and retail components of the business were all snapped up by various investors. The retail end, the part that most affects the consumers, was acquired by AGL.
Soon extra competition appeared in the form of other retailers, but many consumers still stuck with AGL despite having other options available.
The debate still rages as to whether or not the privatisation of the ETSA was good for South Australians. On the one hand it has introduced more consumer choice, and it was expected that the ETSA would have lost over $2 billion across a ten year period. On the other prices have become extremely high and many consumers are finding it tough to pay their bills.
You don’t have to stick with high prices
Electricity Monster works hand-in-hand with some of South Australia’s best-known retailers. Companies like Alinta and Simply Energy. We know our brokers can get you a top rate on your residential or business connection and if we can’t we will tell you. So you can shop with confidence that your making an educated and informed decision when using our service. Our brokers can get you an up to 9% discount on your power bill, and we will do it for FREE.
The South Australian electricity market was deregulated over fifteen years ago. The options open for your residential electricity, or your business electricity, are more extensive than ever before. You now have the opportunity to choose the electricity company that best suits your needs. In spite of this, some people are still sticking with their same old supplier and paying the same old rates as if they didn’t have an option in the first place. This doesn’t have to be you!
You shouldn’t want to stay with a provider that’s overcharging you, especially when your power bills are some of the most expensive in the country. Not only that, but according to some experts South Australians in fact pay the most in the world for their electricity. Here’s what energy economist Bruce Mountain had to say in an interview ABC:
“After taxes, the [typical] household in South Australia will be paying slightly more than the [typical] household in Denmark, which currently has the highest prices in the world”
- Energy Economist
Mr. Mountain didn’t stop there however. He went a step further, in his estimation, not only are South Australians paying more for their power than anyone else in the world, but that the prices are so high that they exceed the actual value of the power they’re using.
Don’t get it into your head that these big energy companies feel bad about any of this. In addition to making an absolute killing, the energy companies have actually designed the system to work this way. Don’t believe me? Here’s Reza Evans, a managing director at CQ Partners, an energy consulting firm, on the subject of the outrageous energy prices South Australians are subjected to:
“This market is actually designed to do this. It's actually designed for high prices to occur […] It's not what customers like, I don't like to see it either.”
- Managing Director at CQ Partners
With you being taken to the cleaners left right and centre by these big corporations and the government doing very little to stop it, what can you do? Here’s what you do it’s time to start to find the best deals and the top plans for yourself.
It’s time to make deregulation work for you!

What is a smart meter?
Smart meters (or advanced digital meters in SA) are currently being rolled out across the country. They became available in SA in December of 2017. Smart meters offer a more flexible and accurate reading of your power usage and helps eliminate human error, and unlike dumb meters, smart meters take readings every 30 minutes, rather than every three months.
What is an electricity usage charge?
An electricity usage charge is what each kilowatt (kWh) of electricity you consume use will cost. How much it costs can vary, however it will often be between 20c/kWh and 30c/kWh. Try to remember that these charges will make up a big portion of your power bill, so make sure you call us at Electricity Monster to see if you can find a sharper rate.
What is an electricity supply charge?
An electricity supply charge is the charge to remain hooked up to any energy network in South Australia. This might appear as cents per day, or it might appear as a larger sum. These rates vary from retailer to retailer so it pays to compare.
What is an electricity tariff?
Electricity tariffs are complicated but we’ll try to make them clear. These are how your use of electricity is structured, in regards to what you’re charged. Basically, you will be charged differently, depending on how you use your electricity. Electricity typically vary from retailer to retailer, but common ones are:
- Single rate
- Controlled load
- Block rate
- Two rate
- Time of use
What is a peak usage rate?
A peak usage rate is a variable charge for the use of electricity at peak times, and this is related to your particular tariff. Someone on a single rate tariff will pay the same rates throughout the day, whereas someone on a two-rate tariff will pay both peak and off-peak rates.
What constitutes a peak time depends on specific suppliers, and in which state you live. For instance, if you are with AGL for power, peak rates occur between 4pm and 9pm in SA.
What is an off peak rate?
The other side of the peak usage coin, off peaks rates are a seperate rate you will be charged during off peak hours. Just like how your tariff affects your peak usage rate, it also affects your off peak rate.
If you are on a single rate tariff then you will not pay peak and off peak rates, but if you’re on a two rate tariff you will. Much like peak rates, off peak rates are set by retailers. Off peak times for AGL in SA are between 9pm and 4pm.
What is a pay on time discount?
A pay on time discount is a reduction of your overall power bill, received as a reward for paying your power bill on time. The discount operates as an incentive from your retailer, towards paying your bills on time.
However, remember to continue paying your bill on time every single quarter, as an outstanding bill will affect your pay on time discount. You might end up with a bill that has a substantial jump in charges.
What is a direct debit discount?
Similar to a pay on time discount, a direct debit discount often comes on top of a pay on time discount, saving you even more. You would get this discount if you pay your supplier using direct debit rather than as a bill payment or automatic payment.
What is a discount benefit period?
This is the length your provider will apply your discount for. This period varies, but commonly it could be from anywhere from 12-24 months. Once this period ends you will return to the standard power rate, sometimes this can be a significant increase.
What if I can't pay my electricity bill?
First ask yourself: Why you can’t pay your bill? Is it too expensive? Have your prices jumped up as a result of your discount period expiring? Perhaps it’s time to switch to a new provider? In that case, you need to call us.
What is Bill Smoothing?
An excellent option for the budget conscious, bill smoothing is where the customer sets up fixed payments of their electricity bill, sometimes in a weekly or fortnightly fashion.
This is often based on your previous power usage habits and shortfalls and excesses in payments are made up in later bills.
How do I switch electricity providers?
Call us. We take care of everything.
When should I switch electricity suppliers?
Right when you feel you are paying to much for power. Power changes come into effect in every state, every year. If this change coincides with your discount period concluding, you could be in for a massive bill next quarter. That’s why you need compare suppliers, and that’s why you should give us a call.
