What’s Driving Electricity Costs Higher In South Australia?

electricity-prices-graph

Electricity generation in SA is heavily reliant on gas-fired plants.

Therefore, when gas prices rise in Australia, electricity costs in SA go through the roof.

In just a year from 2016 to 2017, South Australia electricity prices rose a stunning 17%.

That period coincides with a severe gas crisis in the country, with low domestic supplies preceding large price increases.

A report from the competition body ACCC found that SA residents on a standing offer were paying $832 more than the cheapest market offer available.

For South Australian homes, the major contributor to their power bill is network charges.

Network charges relate to maintaining power lines and poles.

For a SA average electricity bill, network charges make up over 40% of it.

Government policy allows retailers to earn high returns for investing in more poles and wires. Given that incentive, network companies went berserk. The value of Australia’s network rose by $30 billion in under a decade.

Distribution network charges will rise another 3.8% before the end of this decade.

Paul looked with concern at his wife of 12 years, Jennifer, as she made her way back home from their mailbox. The worried expression on Jennifer’s face as she clutches on tightly to an open letter from the mail, makes Paul sweat. As Paul’s mind races, Jennifer comes in and loudly declares in pain, “The power bill is huge! Paulie, how are we going to pay for it?”.

What To Expect With SA Electricity Bills

Forecasts from the market authority AEMC are predicting a 7.3% fall in South Australia electricity prices by 2020.

Over that period, the AEMC expects the wholesale prices of electricity to decrease by nearly 23%.

The fall is mainly driven by more power coming online from new power plants.

The fall in wholesale costs is excellent news for South Australia electricity bills, which have risen $171 in a decade from wholesale price increases.

A June 2018 report from the competition watchdog ACCC says the South Australia electricity market is making it “difficult for small players to compete”.

Large retailers who own power generation assets have a significant advantage in the retail market.

The report also found that such a move could cut the average electricity bill in South Australia by $100.

Why wait for prices to fall eventually? Take some action right now!

Disclaimer:

This publication looks at how much a 4-person household pays a year, on average, on plans from Origin, AGL, EnergyAustralia and an Electricity Monster Partner in SA. By all means, no financial decisions should be made based on data from this publication. Individual usage, circumstances and brands could cause usage figures to vary.

Important points to note are:

  • In brief, we do not guarantee that the information applies to every household in SA.
  • Significantly, all dollar figures are including GST.
  • In effect, the comparison is between specific market offers that Origin, AGL and EnergyAustralia have in a state and the rates an Electricity Monster partner offers.
  • Rates are accurate as of August 15, 2019.
  • Specifically, comparisons are on the peak rates in single rate plans from retailers, plus their daily electricity supply charges.
  • Accordingly, electricity rates used are from the websites of electricity retailers. We have not verified their accuracy.
  • Chiefly, electricity benchmarks used for the average energy usage of households are from the AER website.
  • Notably, we have taken the SA Power Networks distributor across all electricity retailers in SA.
