What is the $500 Energy Bill Relief Payment?
In lieu of the energy crisis, the Australian Government, in partnership with state and territory governments, is offering targeted cost-of-living relief for eligible households and small businesses.
This rebate will be automatically deducted from the eligible resident’s energy bills over the next financial year. This means you do not need to apply anywhere to receive this rebate.
How Can I Reduce My Energy Bill Further?
If you think you’re paying more for electricity, it’s possible you are. One of the easiest ways you can lower your bill is to compare energy plans and switch to a more competitive rate. Most retailers offer a benefit period that ends after a specified period (i.e. 12 months). Once this promotional period ends, you may be paying more than necessary. At Electricity Monster, we can help you potentially lower your bill by comparing rates and finding you a fair deal from our network of partnered retailers. Am I Eligible for the Energy Relief Payment?
According to the Australian Government, you are eligible for the rebate if you meet the following requirements:
- You must be the primary electricity account holder; or
- A named account holder on your residence’s electricity account.
- You must have an eligible concession card; or
- Received an eligible payment from the government in your state or territory.
Each household is eligible to receive one bill relief credit, even if there are multiple eligible residents. The Government has stated that bill relief is only available for your principal place of residence.
If you believe you are eligible and are not named on the bill but pay for electricity, it is recommended to change this through your energy provider to get the bill relief.
How Much Money Can I Get?
The rebate amount is dependent on where you live. Below, we’ve broken down each state so you can see what eligible households or small businesses can receive.
State | Eligable Household Rebate | Eligable Small Business Rebate |
---|---|---|
Australian Capital Territory | $175 | $325 |
New South Wales | $500 | $350 |
Northern Territory | $350 | $350 |
Queensland | $500 | $650 |
South Australia | $500 | $650 |
Tasmania | $250 | $650 |
Victoria | $500 | $325 |
Western Australia | $350 | $350 |
*This amount will vary based on your electricity consumption. The ACT Government is lowering electricity tariffs through its Large-scale Feed-in Tariff Scheme. The base rebate of $325 provided by the Australian Government may include an additional amount.
When Will I Get My Energy Relief Payment?
Eligible residents will receive their energy relief payment according to their state or territory. Depending on your state or territory, you may get your rebate on a single bill or spread out across multiple energy bills. Below, we’ve listed each state and the estimated time frame residents of that state or territory should expect to receive their payment.
State | Estimated Time Frame |
---|---|
Australian Capital Territory | Quarterly in 2023-2024 |
New South Wales | Quarterly in 2023-2024 |
Northern Territory | Quarterly in 2023-2024 |
Queensland | Quarterly in 2023-2024 |
South Australia | Quarterly in 2023-2024 |
Tasmania | September and June quarters of 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 |

Western Australia | Quarterly in July and December of 2023 |
What If I Live In An Embedded or On-Supplied Network?
If you live in an embedded network and you are eligible to receive the rebate, you will not automatically receive the bill relief. Instead, your state or territory government will provide you with access to receive a direct payment.
Embedded networks can be defined as residents that get their electricity from their landlord in an apartment building, retirement home, or village. A resident that receives power bills but does not have a direct relationship with the retailer may not fall under the embedded network category.
What If I Am Not Eligible For the Rebate?
Another budget measure that you may be able to benefit from is the Energy Savings Plan which offers financing options for homeowners looking to make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes. With a budget of $1 billion allocated to this measure, over 100,000 households will benefit from this plan.
Homeowners suffering from high power bills are also urged to compare energy plans and providers in order to mitigate some of the high costs. If you’re looking to switch or want to compare plans, give Electricity Monster a call today, as we can analyse your energy usage and offer you a variety of free solutions to help you find a better deal.
