Rebates for Senior Citizens
Seniors on a pension have access to rebates or discounts for having a Pensioner Concession Card, Department of Veteran Affairs Card or Seniors Card.
At a glance, these are the discounts/rebate you get as a senior in the major east-coast states:

NSW Electricity Rebates
At this time, New South Wales residents have six separate gas or electricity concessions in Australia:
- Low Income Household Rebate
- Gas Rebate
- Medical Energy Rebate
- Family Energy Rebate
- Seniors Energy Rebate
- Life Support Rebate
If you are living in a residential community or nursing home, and meet eligibility criteria, then you can get an extra 10% off.

Other NSW Energy Rebates
- Energy Accounts Payment Assistance Scheme
The scheme is for when you need emergency help in paying your energy bill. $50 vouchers are issued at St Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army and Anglicare. These organisations will check your eligibility before sending a voucher directly to your retailer. The EAPA scheme doesn’t apply to LPG invoices.
- Discounted energy-efficient air-cons
The NSW government will offer homes a discount for installing an air-con with a high energy efficiency rating. The scheme is temporarily on hold as of the first week of August.
- Appliance replacement offer
Under this scheme, you can get 40% off the cost of a fridge or 50% off the price of a television when you replace your old model. The offer applies to selected models.
- Lighting Upgrade
The Lighting Upgrade scheme will help replace your old lights with energy-efficient LED bulbs.
Queensland Electricity Rebates
For residential customers, beyond the senior rebate, there are two other rebates in Queensland:
- Medical Cooling and Heating Rebate
- Emergency Life Support Concession

Other QLD Energy Rebates
- Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme
If your home is facing a short-term financial crunch in paying your energy bill, you can get a $720 payment every two years. To be eligible, you must either hold a current concession card, earn an appropriate level of income or partake in your energy retailer’s hardship program.
- Rebates for residential home parks and multi-unit residential premises
Residents in multi-unit facilities have access to rebates if they own a PCC issued by Centrelink, DVA Gold Card, Queensland Seniors Card, Commonwealth HCC or an ImmiCard. The owner of the multi-unit property has to submit the application form.
Victoria Electricity Rebates
If Victorians have one thing going for them, it’s the large number of rebates they have access to from the state government. The eight primary rebates available are:

Other VIC Energy Rebates
- Excess gas concession
If your gas spend is over $1587.82 between the winter months of 1 May to 31 October, then you are eligible for a 17.5% discount off your gas usage and service costs. You need to hold a PCC, HCC or Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card. Your gas retailer will check if you need to apply for this concession and will send you an application form. You must declare that the gas is not used for any business activities.
- Electricity Transfer Fee Waiver
Under this scheme, the transfer fee you are charged by retailers when you move properties will be completely waived off. You will need a PCC, Veteran Affairs Gold Card or HCC to be eligible.
South Australia Electricity Rebates
South Australians struggle as SA lags behind other states in having rebates. There are currently three principal rebates in the state:
- Cost of Living Concession
- Energy Bill Concession
- Medical Heating and Cooling Concession
