Electricity Rebates

Most Australians already feel the impact of inflation, cost of living, and high energy costs. Bill shock has become prevalent in many households, and residents are struggling to maximise their savings.

Understanding what electricity rebates exist and staying up to date with the latest rebates and concessions are recommended because they provide Aussies like yourself a chance to save money on your power bills. Given that electricity bills are one of the biggest monthly expenses for most residents, it makes sense to take advantage of these state and government initiatives.

Energy rebates and concession programs are available in every Australian state and territory, which can help reduce electricity bills significantly, but only a small percentage of customers claim them. If you haven’t claimed your electricity rebate yet, you could be missing out on financial assistance that’s readily available.

Households suffering from high power bills are also urged to compare electricity plans and providers as you may be on an expensive plan and overpaying for your energy. If you’re looking to switch or want to compare plans, give Electricity Monster a call today, as we can analyse your energy usage and offer you various free solutions to help you find a better deal. In certain cases, we can even apply for an electricity rebate on your behalf that you are eligible for.

Understanding Electricity Rebates

There are various types of energy rebates and concessions available in Australia. Many of these are sponsored by state governments and the Australian Government. If you are a pensioner, low-income earner, or have a medical condition, there are energy rebates that you may be eligible for, depending on your state or territory.

Electricity rebates are available to eligible households that pay their energy bills and other energy-related expenses. Designed to provide financial assistance and reduce the impact of high energy bills for citizens, these rebates will vary by state or territory, with the dollar amount dependent on the type of rebate, concession, or circumstance. Some rebates are specific to a state, while others may be available for all regions in Australia.

What Electricity Rebates Are Available for Solar Customers?

Households and small businesses that install a renewable energy system may be eligible to benefit from the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which supports small solar installations like residential solar panels, to reduce the purchase cost. This rebate is available to all Australians.

The SRES solar rebate offers Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which are created after an eligible solar system is installed. The value assigned to these certificates can be redeemed by selling or assigning them. How many STCs you can receive are based on factors including, but not limited to:

  • The total amount of renewable electricity your solar system generates or how much electricity consumption is reduced.
  • The climate zone where your system is installed.
  • The size of your solar system.

It is important to note that in order to claim the rebate, a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited solar installer must be involved in the installation process.

Upon receiving these credits, owners can either assign them to an eligible system installer in exchange for a predetermined discount or cash payment.

STCs may also be sold through a designated STC market with variable prices that are subject to the current market or through the STC Clearing House. In order to qualify for STCs, households have an eligible small-scale renewable system.

The SRES scheme creates financial incentives for residents to install:

  • Solar photovoltaic panels
  • Solar water heaters
  • Wind turbines
  • Hydro systems
  • Air source heat pumps
