Energy rebates and concession programs are available in every Australian state and territory, which can help reduce electricity bills significantly, but only a small percentage are actually claiming them. If you think you’re paying more for electricity, it’s possible you are. One of the easiest ways you can lower your bill is to compare electricity plans and switch to a more competitive rate. In order to take advantage of energy concessions, you’ll need to be a Commonwealth concession cardholder, with eligible cards such as:

• Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card
• Centrelink HealthCare Card
• Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card

Residents claiming the concessions must have an energy account in their name and be listed first on their energy bill.

If you are a resident of New South Wales (NSW), you may be eligible for the following rebates:

This rebate is available to those eligible for the Family Tax Benefit.
Rebate amount is up to $180 per year.

The Low-Income Household Rebate is designed to help pensioners, seniors, veterans, and families who are not able to afford their electricity bills due to low income.

The Controlled Load Electricity Concession assists cardholders that have a controlled load connecting to their separately-metered hot water or slab heating.

If you are a resident of South Australia (SA), you may be eligible for the following rebates:

Eligible concession cardholders can receive a discount on their power bill through this scheme.
Rebate amount is up to $0.719 per day (excluding GST) and is applied to your electricity account.

The Medical Heating and Cooling Concession is designed to assist people who are medically unable to regulate their body temperature.

The Cost of Living Concession offers payment assistance to help lower the cost of basic utilities including water, gas, medical bills and electricity.

Concession amount is up to $243.90 for homeowners. Eligible retirees with a seniors health card will receive up to $122. Eligible tenants and renters will receive up to $122.

The Residential Park Resident Concession provides financial assistance to eligible cardholders living in residential or caravan parks.

Concession amount is up to $622.85 a year (paid quarterly) for residents who are residential owners and pay for water, sewerage, and energy. Tenants who pay for their water and energy are entitled to $409.45 a year (paid quarterly).

Veterans, pensioners, and seniors can claim assistance on their electricity and gas bills.
Rebate amount is up to $372.20 for energy and $86.75 for gas.

The Energy Bill Relief Fund provides automatic financial relief to eligible households through the Energy Bill Relief Fund.

Rebate amount is $175 per eligible household. Your bills will also be lower owing to the ACT’s large-scale feed-in tariff scheme, which will lower the average bill by $152.

If you are a resident of the Northern Territory, you may be eligible for the following rebates:

Eligible pensioners and concession cardholders can receive financial assistance on a range of essential goods and services like electricity and water.

Rebate amount is $1,200 per annum for electricity (8000kW) and $800 per annum for water (471kL).
