If you live in Perth, you might be a little bit confused as to what the situation is with your electricity provider. If you’re a residential customer, chances are you’ve probably been with Synergy for some time now, and maybe you’re wondering if you can change providers. Unfortunately, the way things are right now, it’s very unlikely you’ll be able to switch to a new retailer. This is because of the unique regulation surrounding electricity in your state. Everyone who lives in the South West Interconnected System (or SWIS) is placed in one of two categories: “contestable” and “non-contestable”. Contestable customers are the customers in the SWIS that are allowed to choose their provider. Generally, contestable customers are heavy users, such as larger businesses. It’s how much electricity you use that defines whether or not you are a contestable customer. If you’re a resident or a small business, chances are you’re a non-contestable customer and will be with Synergy as your provider.
