Electricity Monster – Your Mates for Sharper Rates!
“You Don’t Need To Stick With Expensive Electricity Companies”
Electricity Monster provides a free service for both families & business looking for a better deal on their electricity & gas. Australian electricity prices have been driven up dramatically in recent times, and finding sharp energy plans is hard. But not with us!
Australians are burdened with some of the most outrageous power bills in the world. So much so that the 2017 Energy Inquiry Report stated:
“20% of residential customers are considered a high risk of experiencing some difficulty in meeting their energy costs”
Because of these fears, rising energy prices have become the number one concern for Australian families. However, your family doesn't have to be one of them. In Queensland your energy needs are unique, and we get that. We understand that you've got to crank the AC a lot and take a dip in the pool on a hot summer's night. Running an air con and pool pump consumes lots of power. Running a house is expensive, even more so in Queensland, so let’s get those expenses down together.
What options do you have?
You might think Queenslanders don’t have the same access to the most competitive plans as people in other states. If you’re looking for electricity in Brisbane, the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast, for instance, you do have plenty of options. That’s because you are in the Energex network; a deregulated electricity network that supports all of South East Queensland. Despite this, some people are sticking with their current providers without knowing that they have a choice. You do have a choice. And seeing as you have a choice, you should take the time to compare. AGL & Origin Energy purchased the states retail customers from Energex in 2006. At the time the Queensland treasurer had this to say:
“These sales are about building a stronger economy for all and delivering benefits for consumers too”
- 36th Premier of Queensland
Despite this, so many people are sticking with these old companies, unaware that there are other options on the market. It pays to shop for a better deal on your electricity and it takes only a few minutes!
You might think that thanks to the price freeze imposed by the state government you’ve managed to dodge the skyrocketing price of electricity. However, a price frozen at a high price is still very high! Why do you think it was frozen? It was too high already! How do you get it down? You compare electricity retailers with Electricity Monster and demand sharper electricity rates. It’s that simple if you use Electricity Monster!
More choice means more competition
For a long time, Queensland’s energy market was dominated by a single monopoly. This was the state government. When it was deregulated in 2007 the government thought this would lead to competition, however, this did not happen. Prices skyrocketed and recently the state government and a privately owned retailer have stepped back in.
Alinta Energy entered into a 50/50 partnership with the state-owned CS Energy. Their goal was to provide electricity to Queenslanders. The deal works with CS Energy providing wholesale electricity and Alinta handling the retail aspect. Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said this of the occasion:
“Now is the time for all retailers to step up and see if they can match these lower price offers”
- 39th Premier of Queensland
Her challenge is one the other retailers really should take up. However, until they do, it’s up to you to navigate the available plans and find the best retailer.
How to find some of the Best Retailers with ease?
Deregulation means more competition; it can also mean more confusion. How do you know which supplier is competitive? With so many options to choose from, how do I know what rates are right for me? This is where it pays to compare electricity companies, but that can be a long and tiresome process. And that's where we come in, with our fast and easy service.
Electricity Monster works hand-in-hand with some of Queensland's leading retailers. Companies like Alinta Energy, Simply Energy & Powershop.
You might have heard that Queensland's market is one of the more affordable in the country, but does it really feel that way to the consumer? You’ve got so many other things in life you’d rather spend your money on than a colossal electricity bill. This is why it pays to compare retailers, but you won’t have to pay us a cent.
So what does a good electricity plan look like in South East Queensland? Our brokers can get you an up to 28% discount on your power usage, and we will do it all for FREE!
Queensland’s Energy Landscape & History
Queensland has Australia's longest relationship with electricity. It began with the installation of eight arc lamps on Brisbane’s Queen Street way back in 1882. Within five years E.G.C. Barton formed the company Barton and White, an electricity company that became Australia’s first electricity suppliers. Initially, the Edison Lane power station only powered the Brisbane post office, but before long the Gresham Hotel was added to its list of customers.
Fast forward a hundred years and Queensland leads the country in raw energy output. Australia produced over 400 million tons of coal in 2017.
Of that, about 300 million tons of coal came from Queensland. Therefore 75% of Australia’s total raw energy production came out of Queensland. As a result of this, Queensland is not just one of Australia’s leading coal suppliers, but one of the leading coal producers in the entire world. After being exported, Queensland coal brings over $20 billion into the Australian economy. Due to the rampant success of the mining industry, the Queensland government plans to back Queensland’s biggest export. Recently, they have earmarked an additional 540km2 of land for exploration.
Queensland’s Future Energy Plans
Before you think Queensland’s energy policy is just digging up dirty black coal and exporting it to the world, the outlook for Queensland’s energy future just turned a shade of green. The Queensland government just granted Lacour Energy a billion dollars to construct up to 195 wind turbines near Rockhampton. This project will create 350 jobs and generate 800 megawatts of electricity, enough to keep the lights on in 800,000 homes. The scheme is part of the Queensland government’s plans to reach 50% renewable energy generation by 2030.
The government’s recent investigation into renewables is leading Queensland down some pretty exciting avenues. $750,000 is in the
Queensland budget for research into hydrogen as a renewable solution. That’s H2 not H2O. Hydrogen is a fantastic fuel source, which offsets carbon emissions. The Japanese government has invested over $12 billion into hydrogen, and cornering this market as well would help solidify Queensland’s dominance of the Australian energy industry.
An industry that all started with a ten horsepower generator and eight lights. Nowadays it’s over 300 million tons of Queensland coal providing business and residential electricity across Australia and the world. Electricity Monster can match you with some of the most cost-effective electricity retailers Brisbane has to offer. And some of the most cost-effective electricity providers Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast has to offer. How do we do it? Well…

Will switching retailers cost me money?
How do I sign up to an electricity plan?
What is a smart meter?
What is an electricity usage charge?
What is an electricity supply charge?
What is an electricity tariff?
Electricity tariffs are complicated but we’ll try to make them clear. These are how your use of electricity is structured, in regards to what you’re charged. Basically you will be charged differently, depending on how you use your electricity. Electricity typically vary from retailer to retailer, but common ones are:
- Single rate
- Controlled load
- Block rate
- Two rate
- Time of use
What is a peak usage rate?
A peak usage rate is a charge for the use of electricity at peak times, however this is dependent on what type of tariff you have. If you are on a single rate tariff, you will pay the same rates at any time of day, if you’re on a two-rate tariff will pay both peak and off-peak rates.
What constitutes a peak time depends on specific providers, and in which state you live. For instance, if you are with AGL for power in Queensland, peak rates occur between 4pm and 8pm, Monday to Friday.
What is an off peak rate?
Exactly what you might think it is Off peaks rates are what you will be charged during off peak hours. Like with peak rates your tariff also affects your peak and off peak rates. If you’re on a single rate tariff you won’t have to worry, but if you are on a different kind of tariff you might have to pay varying rates.
The same way peak rates are set by retailers, off peak rates are also set by retailers. For instance, off peak times for AGL in Qld are between 10pm and 7am Monday to Friday, and also between 10pm and 7am on weekends.
What is a pay on time discount?
A pay on time discount is a reward offered by our supplier for paying your bill on time. How much this can be will vary. Suppliers offer this as an incentive to both sign up to their plans, and pay your bills on time.
However, remember to continue paying your bill on time every time you get it, as unpaid bills will affect your discount. Not paying your bills on time could result in a big jump in charges.
What is a direct debit discount?
This works similarly to a pay on time discount. The same way your provider might offer a pay on time discount for paying on time, they may also offer a direct debit discount for paying via direct debit.
What is a discount benefit period?
