Got AGL questions? We’ve got AGL answers.
For many years now, AGL has been one of the leading electricity retailers in the country.
And when we say many years, we do mean many years.
AGL can trace it’s origins back over nearly two centuries, to the Australian Gas Light Company which was founded way back in 1837.
While they started out dealing with street lights, now they deal with every light they can, and they’d like to fire up yours as well.
In this review, we’re going to take a look at what AGL can offer you in terms of charges, customer service, and variety.
We’ll break the retailer down by state and give you an overall rating.
Let’s get started.
Looking for a good rate? Maybe consider going with AGL. They offer three plans in each state; plans which mostly come through with some decent to good prices. In an unusual move, their best plan in each state discards discounts in favour of a good old fashioned low rate.
On top of all that, AGL also has a fantastic rewards shop that offers its customers discounts on over 4000 products. We’re going to go more in depth about what AGL offers below. So check out our state by state breakdown. In case you’re just looking for the broad strokes, here’s how we rate AGL overall.
Let’s get started on our price analysis. So far so good for AGL. For starters they offer quite a selection of plans, up to 3 are available; AGL Savers Online, AGL Savers Home Connect and AGL Residential Essentials Plus. On top of that, two of the plans come at a great price. If you’re considering a retailer in NSW, consider AGL
Let’s head up to Queensland and check out what AGL is offering up north. It turns out to be an even better performance than in NSW. Not only do they offer the same wide variety of plans but AGL Residential Essentials Plus once again comes with a barnstorming offer for residential customers. If you’re looking for a better deal in Queensland perhaps consider talking to AGL.
Victoria, also known as one of the most developed electricity markets in the world, is a hard one to get a footing in. With so many big-time offers available, coming through with something competitive is a tricky business. AGL, to their credit, holds their own with the AGL Essentials Plus once again the most cost-effective plan.
Finally, we’re going to take a look at what AGL can offer South Australian citizens, and goodness knows they need it. If Victoria is the most competitive state, you could suggest that South Australia is the least. With some of the most expensive prices in the country, South Australians have been getting a raw deal for a while now. AGL comes through with some decent, if not amazing, prices in this state.
That’s residential, what about if you’re a business customer? The good news is AGL has some business plans available for your consideration. In each state, you’ll have three choices, AGL Business Everyday, AGL Business Savers and their newest plan AGL Business Essentials.
The size (or existence) of the discount on these plans can vary quite greatly from state to state, but a few components of these plans remain the same.
For starters, AGL Business Essentials ignores having a discount in each state and much like it’s residential counterpart, it just offers a low rate instead. Meanwhile, AGL Business Savers and AGL Business Everyday come with guaranteed discounts. What sets each of these bills apart is what the guaranteed discount is applied to.
With AGL Business Everyday, the guaranteed discount is smaller but applied to both your usage and supply charges.
So by extension, AGL Business Savers offers a guaranteed discount on just your usage. These are small distinctions, but if you have an in-depth knowledge of your business’s electricity usage you’ve got the options there to pick the right plan for you.

In short, quite a bit. AGL likes to throw in the odd bonus feature as an extra incentive to use their service. If you’ve read through the rest of the review, you might have noticed that price-wise AGL Savers Home Connect didn’t get a lot of love from us. However, one really interesting aspect of this plan is that it comes with a free Amazon Echo Dot, which is a nice little bonus.
Then there’s their massive rewards shop. AGL Rewards is a fantastic bonus to having your electricity provided by AGL. AGL Rewards can net you some great discounts on everything from restaurants, to movies to even travel. So far, AGL has given out rewards to over 400,000 people of their nearly 1.4 million power customer base.
AGL also offers it’s customers a very helpful phone app. This app can help you monitor your energy usage no matter where you might be in the country. It also offers you the benefit of having all your bills in one place.
Now that you know about AGL, you need to know how it compares to other retailers.
What you should do is figure out what some of the other retailers are offering and compare it to what AGL advertises.
However, doing all this manually could take forever.
